Weekend Race Report – April 27th-28th
Mustang Endurance athletes opened up their outdoor track seasons at the 38th Annual Ralph Vernacchia Track & Field Meet on Saturday at Civic Stadium in Bellingham. Athletes produced a number of good opening times in very windy conditions.
In the Men’s 1500m invitational race James Lam battled to a 5th place finish (3:59.31) finishing top Mustang. It was a close race with only a few seconds separating the top 8 in the field. Nick Colyn ran 4:00.71 for 8th place. He was followed by Adam Marshall in 10th (4:07.45) and Ron Loewen 12th (4:16.45). The race was won by junior Rhys Kramer of UBC in (3:56.68).
The Women’s 1500m invitational race saw Olympian Jessica Smith take a convincing win (4:27.59). Mustang Endurance athlete Mikela Smart placed 12th in 4:44.68. The Sevek sister’s Christina and Julie competed in the Women’s open 1500m section. Christina placed 6th (5:02.06) and Julie 7th (5:07.81).
On Sunday, Langley Mustang athlete Sarah Inglis broke the women’s course record in winning the 30th Times Colonist 10K in 32 minutes and 24 seconds. The previous course record was set by Karolina Jarzynska of Poland in 2011 (33:56). Sarah also took gold in the BC 10km Championships which was incorporated into the event. Training partner Lindsay Carson finished a fine 4th in 34:41. The event, held in Victoria had almost 10,000 race finishers.
Next up for the group with be Portland Twilight track meet on May 2nd and BMO half marathon May 5th.
