Sarah Inglis sets Canadian all-comers 5K record at St. Patrick’s Day 5K in Vancouver

The St Patrick’s Day 5K that takes place in Vancouver’s Stanley Park lived up to its hype as Canada’s most competitive 5K race, despite the late withdrawal of several top entrants. Transplanted Scot, Sarah Inglis, broke the Canadian all-comers record that was set by Natasha Wodak at last year’s race. Saturday, Inglis ran a stunning 15:29, with Wodak just three seconds under the old mark having to settle for second as she finished in 15:36. Wodak’s consolation was an F3539 Canadian record, and the BC Championship title.

Really Something Special

There are several training groups and run clubs throughout Greater Vancouver that offer varying competitive training opportunities for serious athletes. One that provides a focus on middle-distance training – from 800-metres to 3,000-metres as well as up to the 10,000-metre event – is headed by former Trinity Western University coach Mark Bomba.

The group is affiliated with the Langley Mustangs Track and Field Club and they informally refer to themselves as the Langley Mustangs Endurance Group. For a quiet, suburban training club, one may be surprised at the level of athletes that train there.

Bomba, known for coaching the likes of Fiona Benson, who competed in the 2015 Beijing IAAF World Track and Field Championships, leads the group.
